Why an author edits
Note 01Most editors have read a lot of horror and speculative fiction. Kris has also had to build it — find the seam where dread turns into scare, decide how much a monster gets to explain itself, keep an ensemble cast readable across three hundred pages. That's a different muscle than taste, and it's the one that catches the problems a craft checklist misses.

Note 03Character Continuity
A secondary character had gone quiet for several chapters right as a major off-page event needed his reaction. She flagged the gap and suggested the moment be used to reinforce his perspective — a small note that keeps every character in a scene feeling intentional, not just present.
Sentence-Level Clarity
A richly atmospheric passage left it unclear whether “witnessed” and “instrument” referred to a chronicle or to ancient runes. She flagged the ambiguity and asked the author to clarify the subject — catching confusion before it could break a reader's immersion, without touching the prose's tone.
Character Awareness
A character's realization echoed something she may have already known. She flagged the possible redundancy and asked whether the moment was new understanding or reinforcement — the kind of continuity check that keeps a character's internal logic airtight.
Pacing & Reveal Timing
A dialogue scene delivered a major reveal through choppy sentences that blurred exactly when the reader was meant to understand what had happened. She flagged the rhythm and the timing separately — because a reveal that lands in the wrong sentence lands nowhere at all.
Before & After: Grounding a Reaction in the Body
A line telling us a character cried moved from stated emotion to lived, physical sensation — exactly the kind of five-senses grounding that turns a reaction the reader is told about into one they feel.
“I shook my head. ‘You're the one who wanted to save him! And now that is obviously impossible…’ I responded as tears streamed from my eyes.”
“I shook my head. ‘You're the one who wanted to save him!’ I choked as I sobbed, tears dripping down and soaking through my dress. ‘And now that is obviously impossible!’ I felt my chest and throat tightening as though an asthma attack could come on at any moment.”
On an early draft where scenes kept summarizing feelings instead of showing them, her note to the author read:
“This character spends a lot of time thinking and reflecting. I would like more feeling and what they experience in their environment — five senses.”
“What emotion is he feeling? Tone of voice, gestures, cadence, and body language can communicate this.”
The author traced the habit back to years of tabletop game-mastering, where summary-style narration is second nature — and revised toward scenes readers could feel, not just follow.
